Summary

On Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at about 5:00 p.m. Keizer Police Officer Jeremie Fletcher observed a 1992 Honda Civic hatchback with no license plates or temporary registration displayed that was travelling eastbound on Lockhaven Drive NE from River Road North.  The vehicle was occupied by a lone male driver.  Officer Fletcher attempted to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle near the intersection of Lockhaven Drive NE and McLeod Lane NE for the traffic violations he observed, but after activating his overhead emergency lights the driver of the vehicle attempted to elude him by turning southbound onto Chemawa Road NE at a high rate of speed.  Officer Fletcher chose to terminate the pursuit within seconds after it began, but he continued to travel in the same direction of the fleeing vehicle.

Officer Eric Jefferson was near the intersection of Brian Court NE and Chemawa Road NE when he observed the fleeing vehicle travel past him at a high rate of speed.  He then observed the fleeing vehicle travel off the roadway and through a field near the intersection of Chemawa Road NE and Verda Lane NE when he too elected not to pursue the vehicle at that time.  He last observed the vehicle travelling eastbound on Keizer Road NE towards the Keizer Little League fields.

Both Officer Fletcher and Officer Jefferson continued driving in the direction the fleeing vehicle was last observed travelling.  When they reached the Keizer Little League fields a citizen indicated to them the fleeing vehicle had drove past the fields northbound on Ridge Drive NE.  The officers continued in that direction and soon came upon the suspect vehicle that had parked adjacent to a dwelling just north of the Little League complex.  When the driver, later identified as 20-year old Colton Shane McElroy of Salem, saw them he drove through the parking lot of the Keizer Church of Christ and down a steep embankment towards one of the softball fields players were warming up on thereby putting them at substantial risk of serious physical injury.  Colton McElroy then continued driving westbound on a gravel access road that borders the Little League fields past numerous other players and families who were also warming up or practicing.  He drove in this reckless manner until he crashed the vehicle into a chain-link fence that borders the west side of the Keizer Little League park.  After crashing the vehicle he fled on foot from the officers.

Several additional officers from the Salem Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff's Office responded to the area to set a perimeter in an effort to apprehend Colton McElroy whose identity was not known to the officers at that time.  In addition to the uniformed officers, two K-9 teams, one from the Keizer Police Department and one from the Marion County Sheriff's Officer deployed.

After almost 1 1/2 hours of searching for the suspect, Keizer Officer Scott Keniston and his K-9 partner Bruno located Colton McElroy hiding in a chicken coop behind the residence located at 1980 Chemawa Road NE.  He was taken into custody without further incident.

Colton McElroy has been transported to the Marion County Correctional Facility.  Anyone having information about this incident is asked to contact Officer Jeremie Fletcher at 503-390-3713 Ext. 3467.
